Photo Restoration

Pricing for photo restoration depends on the level of effort needed to restore the photo. Level of effort is based on four tiers of damage.

Basic Restoration

Minor blemishes, dust removal, light fading and/or small tears. $10–$25 per image.

Moderate Restoration

Torn edges, discoloration, background cleanup, and/or light reconstruction. $30–$50 per image.

Advanced Restoration

Water damage, mold stains, missing areas, facial reconstruction. $60-$90 per image.

Extreme Restoration

Severe damage, full background rebuild, colorization, artistic restoration. $100+

Digitization Services (Image Scanning)

When I receive the photos to be restored, I will scan them and determine the cost to restore prior to doing any work on them. You will have the ability to decline the work before I start the restoration process. When I restore an image, I typically do not do anything to the image to change the content of the original image, if possible. I will darken the image, if needed. I will adjust the colors if they are faded. However, I try to leave the image as original as possible. I scan the images at 300 dots per inch, or higher. This allows the image to be displayed at a larger size without it pixelizing, makes it easier to fix the scratches, dust spots, etc., and allows the photo to be printed in with quality, especially if you are upsizing your photo.

For legal and ethical reasons, Past & Present Pixels LLC cannot scan or reproduce copyrighted photographs, artwork, or prints without permission from the copyright owner.

This includes:
  • Professional studio portraits
  • School photos
  • Wedding photos taken by a hired photographer
  • Commercial prints or artwork
Items that can be scanned include:
  • Photos you personally took
  • Family snapshots from personal cameras
  • Public domain images
  • Photos where the copyright has expired
  • Images where you have written permission
If you’re unsure whether your photo qualifies, feel free to ask.

I will scan your images based on what you intend to use them for. If you plan to only use them digitally, for display on the computer screen, I will scan them at 72 dots per inch. If you intend to print the photos, I will scan them at least 300 dots per inch. Smaller photos, for example, wallet sized photos, I will scan at a higher dot per inch so they display larger on the screen and will print to a larger size without any distortion. Scanning at a higher DPI setting takes longer, and therefore will cost a little more than scanning for display on a computer screen. I can scan photos up to 8"x10".

Metal, framed, acrylic, and canvas prints are priced based on size, materials, and current supplier rates. Final pricing will be quoted before ordering.
